Endless Loss – Traversing The Mephitic Artery

endless loss – traversing the mephitic artery

Info

After a demo, a digitally available live set and an EP, the Australian Black/Death Metal band Endless Loss felt it was time to unleash their fury through a full-length album, which materialized in the form of ‘Traversing The Mephitic Artery’. And, frankly, it turned out to be an album that doesn’t only fit to its great artwork, but also very much to its title…

When listening through the full 28-minutes of the album it is clear that Endless Loss has shaken off quite a bit of their crude and crusty sound of their earliest recordings. Instead they have opted for a full-fledged Black/Death Metal attack, free from all bells and whistles. Thundering and colossal. The chaotic-approach doesn’t only fit to their Australian origin, but more importantly it suits their new musical approach. Oh, well, not entirely new, of course, as the core of the band’s musical DNA is still very much in place, but it is clear that the band has chosen to shift more to this way more overwhelming sound.

Although the preceding ‘Bloodletting Narcotic Divination’ EP was already a step in this specific direction, all elements fall much better into place on this debut album. Also the sound, with its very prominent cymbals and vocals, do attribute to the chaotic and overwhelming experience. The vortex of possessed vocals, bellowing grunts and maniacal screams, and those accentuated cymbals placed Endless Loss way more prominently into the category of bands like Grave Miasma, Teitanblood, Diocletian, Angelcorpse, Antediluvian or their compatriots of Ignivomous and classic Bestial Warlust.

Because of its perfectly short playing time the relentless pummelling and hammering of the skull comes across even more profusely violent and murderous. Consequently, Endless Loss is putting themselves right up in the higher ranks of the chaos and tumult-ridden lunacies of the aforementioned bands. At the time of writing, and I know I am arriving a little late to the party, this has yet only been released on cassette tape and CD, so now the wait is for a vinyl edition.
