Hexella – A Road In Hell [Demo]

hexella – a road in hell [demo]

Info

Emerging from the scorched and dusty cracked soil of Mission, Texas, Hexella is a sonic juggernaut that welds blackened thrash and punk into a singular, feral force. Conceived in 2019 as a studio-only endeavor, the band is helmed by the formidable Noelia Garza—whose vocals and guitar work channel a visceral fury—alongside drummer JD De La Rosa, whose percussive assault gives the compositions their relentless pulse.

With two demos and a split with Wülfskol already under their bullet-studded belts, Hexella is poised to unleash their full-length debut via Hells Headbangers. But until that beast is loosed in our offices, we turn our attention to their second demo, ‘A Road in Hell’—specifically the CD edition released by Tenebrous Aberrations, which includes five original tracks plus a blistering sloppy cover of Bulldozer’s ‘Cut-Throat.’

This release is a raw, sinew-straining affair: muscular riffage drenched in sweat and distortion, propelled by pinguid D-beat rhythms that churn like a rusted engine on fire. The guitars snarl and screech with swampy menace, while Noelia’s vocals—equal parts sandpaper and snarl—evoke the spirit of Debbie Gunn (Sentinel Beast), Korgüll the Exterminator, Holy Moses and Detente. There’s a spectral grime reminiscent of early Voivod clinging to the edges, but the sound never veers into mere retro mimicry. Instead, Hexella distills their influences into something authentically filthy and ferocious.

Imagine a venom-laced bassline slithering beneath zombified guitar tones, riffs erupting like jagged shrapnel, and vocals that sound like they were recorded inside a burning mausoleum. It’s the kind of sonic violence that compels involuntary movement—slam pit rituals, beer-soaked chaos, and the kind of cathartic mayhem that only true underground metal can summon.

Though the demo’s production is far from pristine, it’s precisely that rawness that amplifies its charm. And if the preview tracks from their forthcoming album are any indication, Hexella is about to detonate on a much larger scale. No surprise that Hells Headbangers snapped them up without hesitation.

In short: ‘A Road in Hell’ is a savage cocktail of blackened Thrash and Punk that lands like a steel-toed boot to the groin—and it works. For those curious about the band’s origins, this CD is still available via Tenebrous Aberrations (courtesy of the ever-attuned Perez family). Grab a beer, crack it on the skull of the nearest bystander, and slamdance your way into oblivion. Life, after all, can be gloriously unhinged. Ride ‘em cowboy!
