If there is someone who understands 90s Melodic Death and Black Metal, that would undoubtedly be Lord Metal from Japan. The talented multi-instrumentalist has already graced us with two very good projects that pay tribute to this era. One is In Nothingness, a band that sounds like something No Fashion Records would have put out in 1998. The other Daemonian, whose album last year showcased all the best attributes of Swedish Melodic Black Metal in a neat package. Lord Metal has been hard at work and decided to grace us with yet another project under the banner A Nameless Grave, this time paying tribute to the earliest days of the Gothenburg sound.
If you had told me this was a lost Dark Tranquillity or In Flames demo from 1993/4, I would completely believe you. Everything from the beautiful tremolo picking to the intentionally raw production is a hark back in time to when the genre was in its nascent days. Lord Metal is very cognizant of the fact these early recordings took a great deal of influence not just from the twin guitar harmonies of Iron Maiden, but the fast and frantic pace of Thrash. All 3 tracks are a never-ending barrage of energy, capturing the wild and youthful nature of the genre at a point where the line separating Melodic Death and Melodic Black did not really exist and both flowed together without any issues. It transports us back to a time where you could still hear furious blast beats alongside harmonious guitar leads – just listen to the off-the wall percussive performance on ‘Unleash Thy Grief’.
This demo was specifically made for those Melodic Death and Black fanatics who still remember the days of 91-94, before the template was set on how to write and perform either style. It can be difficult to tap into the mindset and spirit of a niche that has been forgotten by many, but luckily Lord Metal understands the many minute details that made the first works of In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Eucharist and many others so special.
