The first EP from Germany’s Doom Cult Commando, a new act by Desaster’s Infernal, is a mix of dark raw primal, heavily soaked in atmosphere, it uncoils itself and slithers just to conjure unease, like a presence felt, then a cold sharp finger caressing the back of your neck, when you turn there is nothing there. For those expecting easy listening Black Metal, this is not that, there are no frills or gimmicks here!
It feels like the riffs are slicing through a black forbidding fog as they travel on a treacherous path, void of any light. The vocals are half sang shrieked in the Germanic language with the delivery reminding me at times of Attila of Mayhem.
Overall, this EP flies the flag of early raw second wave Norwegian Black metal, it picks up its gauntlets where its Norwegian forefathers dropped theirs, bloodied and cold. Think of early Darkthrone, Mayhem and at times the atmospherics of fellow German countrymen Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult. It may take you a few listens to fully absorb its relentlessly cold harsh energy.
However, hardened Black metal fans will have heard many similar acts, having said that if raw unpolished nasty Black Metal done well is your thing, you will be rewarded or punished! If you prefer.
