‘In the Shadow of Your Black Wings’ is Bloodthorn’s debut album from 1997. Prior to this debut album only one demo (‘Natteskygen’) was released in 1996 which attracted Season of Mist’s attention. In Bloodthorn’s line-up we find among others Ihizahg and Jehmod from Perished and Wurdulak. Bloodthorn can’t be compared to both aforementioned bands though.
The music on this album is mainly atmospheric metal with links to Black Metal. The keyboards are an important factor on this album and it are these atmospheric keyboard-lines together with the melodic guitars which carry the songs. Because the songs are build upon many atmospheres they are therefore quite lengthy. Female vocals and whispering voices by Kristine are combined with Krell’s harsh vocals and these combined add a lot to the atmosphere as well. All songs on ‘In the Shadow of Your Black Wings’ are really great and because of the varied atmospheres I get completely sucked into a dreamworld, created by Bloodthorn’s music.
This album contains 66 tracks in 60:15 minutes but actually there are only seven tracks featured. The remaining “songs” are just seconds of silence and at the end a short outro can be found. A bit stupid to try to get 66 songs on an album of which most are only silence. I really don’t see the point in this because it only annoys me a lot. But besides this minor complain ‘In the Shadow of Your Black Wings’ is an amazing album which I still like to play a lot.
Furthermore it is worth mentioning that this album comes in a great looking digi-pack with amazing artwork which suits the musical concept really fine.
