Battlegrave comes from Melbourne, Australia and ‘Cavernous Depths’ is their second full length album (the debut is ‘Relics of a Dead Earth’ from 2018) and is released by the already defunct Australian label Bitter Loss Records. This band consists of two people only – Clint Patzel on bass/guitars and Rohan Buntine behind the mike. No information for a drummer so I cannot give any name.
Besides that, ‘Cavernous Depths’ has ten songs of relentless Thrash/Death metal with some Hardcore influences here and there. The music is fast and furious, the guitar riffs are heavy, the drums offer lots of various rhythms but the most impressive thing on this record is the variety of vocals that Rohan Buntine can provide. You can hear Death Metal growls, Hardcore shouts and higher Thrash Metal screams. Imagine the merciless audio onslaught of Demolition Hammer/Exodus/Rigor Mortis mixed with the heaviness and speed of the Death Metal scene and you have the essence of Battlegrave.
Tracks like ‘We Die Here’, ‘Obssessions Gate’ or ‘The Black Vortex’ are meant for large circle pits and tons of headbanging. The sound production is on a very good level and the cover artwork also looks impressive.
If you are into extreme Thrash Metal then Battlegrave is probably a band that you will like. Rohan Buntine is a great vocalist that suits perfectly with the ferocious music.
‘Cavernous Depths’ is not something revolutionary but is a record that should be heard by every fan of the genre.
