Of all the record labels I could have chosen, I didn’t expect Prosthetic Records to pick up the young Stockholm-based trio Xorsist. However, the Los Angeles label took notice, and on ‘At the Somber Steps of Serenity’, founder Gustav Ryderfelt is joined by a revamped line-up featuring Birk Castenmalm and Alphonse Bouquelon compared to their 2022 debut ‘Deadly Possession’.
This alone ensured that the second full-length is proper Old School Swedish Death Metal, where the vocals are a slightly higher and raspier growl and there are plenty of thrashy riffs, but where the ghost of Dismember floats around the most. Combined with the production by Tomas Skogsberg at Sunlight Studios, everything feels very familiar and will charm many fans of that holy sound.
Simply a good follow-up and a base to keep growing from.
