Now this is one hell of a Death Metal release, maybe one of my favourites from 2026 so far. After releasing a 4-track demo independently in October 2022, Alejandro Sabransky returns with his solo side-project Anatomical Theatre, on a mission to revive the early 90’s Death/Grind sound pioneered by the legendary band Carcass.
‘Untidy Forensic and Clinical Excerpts’ is the first full-length material released by this project through Rotting Racoon Records. Only from the promo tape I already noticed the potential Anatomical Theatre has and I have to say that said potential has been maximized on this release. The guitar work is incredible, standing out with fast chainsaw-like riffs and often times Crust-influenced parts. Although the drums are not very sophisticated, they get the job perfectly done in keeping up the intensity. There’s no shortage of slower, groovier passages, like the intro on the third track ‘Third Stage of Decomposition’, although most of the material is, indeed, a brutal stew of blast beats and aggressive rhythms like hammers to the listener’s ears.
The bass follows the guitar as usual and does nothing particularly special. I’d love to see more passages that emphasize this instrument and a dirtier, more distorted tone. This album has a really good and balanced production that doesn’t compromise the intended aggression while still sounding pretty clean. The early-Carcass-worshipping factor becomes pretty clear after only a few songs but I feel like more bands should return to this sound because unfortunately the Death/Grind sound has become unrecognizable these days. It’s still fun but in terms of songwriting it’s not like it used to be.
If you are into Death Metal, Grindcore or both, make yourself a favour and check out “Untidy Forensic and Clinical Excerpts” by Anatomical Theatre.
