Thy Rites is the brainchild of Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Antonio Albuquerque, also known as Nekrotizer/Strigoi Warskin (ex-Sabbathon, ex-Vis Absoluta, ex-Sanctiphagous, ex-Exekution, ex-Cryptic Lorn). As sole composer, producer, and performer, he channels his vision into a one-man assault on the boundaries of Black and Death Metal. With full creative control, Albuquerque has shaped Thy Rites into a relentless force of sonic extremity.
Lyrically, Thy Rites delves into themes of diabolical worship, horror aesthetics, and vehement anti-Christian sentiment. This thematic direction reflects Albuquerque’s desire to explore the darker corners of extreme metal without falling into repetitive ideological tropes. It’s a tribute to the genre’s roots, but with a personal twist that keeps it fresh and uncompromising.
Musically, Thy Rites stands with one foot rooted in Brazil’s legendary Black/Death/Thrash scene of the late ’80s, and the other in the Greek underground of the early ’90s. The bass-heavy sound conjures the occult atmosphere of Necromantia’s ‘Scarlet Evil Witching Black’, with echoes of early Rotting Christ. The more savage, uptempo passages channel the raw fury of Sepultura, Expulser, Mutilator, and Sarcófago’s ‘The Laws of Scourge’.
The album traverses a range of tempos—from relentless blast beats to stomping mid-paced grooves—creating a dynamic and unpredictable listening experience. Atmospheric keyboard flourishes add a pagan, Graveland-esque layer to the chaos. Guitar solos, clearly inspired by early Pestilence and Death, are a standout feature: aggressive, fluid, and unapologetically old-school. Though the songwriting may seem like a patchwork of influences, it all comes together with surprising cohesion—like magic, really. There are 8 tracks in total.
The production is raw yet effective, giving the music a gritty, underground feel. Guitars, snarling vocals, and eerie synths dominate the mix, while the percussion holds steady with thunderous impact. Though the execution occasionally veers into disorder, it’s a controlled chaos that suits the band’s feral aesthetic.
‘Flagellum Mortis’ marks the eighth full-length release since Thy Rites’ inception in 2008, and the second album of 2025. Preceded by a one-track single, it’s currently available in digital format, with a physical release expected by year’s end. The consistency and intensity of the Thy Rites discography is nothing short of formidable.
Fans of uncompromising, hyper-speed War/Black/Death metal with a distinctly Brazilian edge should not sleep on Thy Rites. This is extreme music at its most feral—chaotic, relentless, and gloriously unrepentant.
Vocally, Thy Rites delivers a barrage of muffled growls, hoarse invocations, and deep death grunts that erupt throughout the record. The guitars are drenched in filth, the bass rumbles with menace, and the blast beats strike with punishing force. The overall approach is spartan and uncompromising—focused entirely on sonic devastation rather than conceptual nuance.
