Reflet Crépusculaire – The Tormented Wanderer [Compilation]

reflet crépusculaire – the tormented wanderer [compilation]

Info

The name says it all, of course, but on ‘The Tormented Wanderer Trilogy’, the three separate chapters from the trilogy of ‘The Tormented Wanderer’ are brought together on a cassette tape. The individual parts (‘Tenebrae’, ‘Æther’, ‘Spes’) all saw the light of day as an EP in 2022, and followed up the good and also 2022-based ‘Fictions’ EP. Orbius Tertius, the illustrious figure and sole inspirer of this act, does indeed keep a good pace of work.

What is most noticeable when listening to the three parts of the trilogy in succession, together good for an hour of listening pleasure by the way, is that the musical differences between them are very minimal. The three chapters, together comprising nine songs, flow into each other so much that the transitions are actually barely noticeable. This homogeneity benefits the overall ambience, the Ambient/Dungeon Synth laced Raw Black Metal has a certain dreamy character where the melodies could slowly lull you to sleep. Were it not for the different tempos, where slow pieces are ingeniously interspersed with somewhat faster pieces or even almost Punk-like rhythms, keeping you on your toes as a listener. Perhaps it is all not too innovative, nor is Reflet Crépusculaire among the best bands in the genre, yet this fine overall overview of the Tortured Wanderer delivers a pleasant listening experience where it takes you to other worlds. Cold, then, is the return to earth, after an hour of being taken into vague dreamscapes and strangely warm other dimension.
