Ever since their inception in 2021 this young Mexican Speed/Black Metal band has been cranking out demos with utterly raw and rowdy material that is worthy of the old days. After these mandatory demos Phantom, consisting out of four youngsters, finally thought the time was right to squeeze a full-length out of their instruments and the result, frankly, is more than entertaining!
Albeit a bit long for my taste, this 40-minute album brings you nothing but pure and honest love for anything that made metal in the 80’s loud and mean. That means that you are being treated on solid authentic stuff that will remind you of the best the genre had to offer in those formative days of extreme metal. Bits and pieces of Slayer, Venom, Possessed, Hellhammer, Sodom, Protector, Onslaught, Motörhead, Hallows Eve, Exciter and old Sepultura or Kreator are scattered all over the album, making it a thoroughly recognizable and enjoyable ride. Add the great old school artwork and you forced to double-check whether this album is really recorded in 2023 and not in 1985.
It might seem a bit of a rare curiosity to have such a young band honoring the Metal Gods of Old, but the exact opposite is true. It falls right into the bigger picture in which a new generation seem to have discovered the very foundations of extreme metal. As of late many bands found their way to the front of genuine old-schoolism, together with bands like Maniak, Hellcrash or many other bands that seem to find their home in labels like Dying Victims Records, Phantom will proudly bear the flag of the yesteryears metal.
