Info

Depressive Black Metal is always a topic of debate. Are gloomy riffs and ditto atmosphere with tortured vocals enough for you, or should it be utterly disturbing? Gølgaborg falls into the first category, with a thin, bleak guitar sound and repetitive riffs. Count Morthos, who formed Gølgaborg in 2022, started slow with just one release between 2022 and 2023. However, 2024 saw a burst of activity with six releases, including ‘Dejected’.

Although ‘Dejected’ contains three songs and has the length of an EP, the band or label (or possibly both) decided to categorize it as a single. This is likely because two of the three tracks are remastered but previously unreleased demo tracks. As mentioned, the Black Metal presented here leans towards the depressive side, with the title track being particularly bleak and sharp-sounding. Count Morthos’ influences from Abyssic Hate and Burzum are noticeable in the musical approach on this track. The two demo tracks have a more “buried” rehearsal sound. Of the 3 tracks, ‘The Mist Upon Me’ is a bit different as it is more uptempo and Raw Black Metal than Depressive.

If this release is your first encounter with this American one man project, and you enjoy a Depressive touch in your Black Metal and the aforementioned influences, give it a listen.
