Dust off your boots! It is time to take a trip to Finland. This Scandinavian land of lakes and illuminated night skies is the place where a new raw Black Metal artist has surfaced. Primordial Gate is a project that consists of a lone musician by the moniker of ‘Yöpyöveli’. Emerging from beneath a snowy tundra is the artist’s first release, a forty three minute demo offering entitled ‘Silence of the Slumbering Landscape’.

The raw nature of the tape offers relatively conventional instrumentation that is all performed with a fairly exciting energy. The drum performances and guitar riffs are pretty great, and the album’s general tonality features the classic guise of an audible equivalent to trekking through a battering snowstorm. A track such as ‘Summoning the Ancestral Spirit’ features righteous and triumphant sounding lead guitar melodies. It’s a fun little cut that is akin to bravely venturing through a whitened mountain pass during some kind of noble voyage. ‘Scars Upon Timeless Land’ has a grandiose marching energy that feels quite huge in scope, even when considering that the breath of raw instrumentation on this release is fairly restrained.

I can draw a number of stylistic parallels from this demo to classic atmospheric acts such as Moonblood and Paysage d’Hiver. Whilst I can’t say that this tape offers anything particularly unique or distinctive amongst an endless sea of similar releases, Primordial Gate has delivered a respectable batch of tracks here with generally great performances and engaging, frequently exciting songwriting. I recommend an introductory listen to lovers of this classic style, for whom may also find some enjoyment in the tape’s melodic strengths.
