Woe from Philadelphia (later Brooklyn, New York) is one of the defining acts of the ‘modern USBM’ movement; sharp, aggressive, emotionally charged Black Metal with: High‑intensity tremolo riffing, clear, articulate production (not raw lo‑fi), strong melodic undercurrents, occasional post‑hardcore / crust / atmospheric touches, lyrical focus on personal struggle, existentialism, social decay, not occult themes. Gone are the references to Satanism and anti-religion.

Think: early Krallice, Nachtmystium, Mgła, Yellow Eyes, Weakling lineage, but more direct and riff‑driven. The band is centered around Chris Grigg and active since 2007.

The band started as a solo project of Chris Grigg, but with the album ‘Quietly, Undramatically’, he assembled a full lineup and has operated as a full band since then.

The band has released 5 full length albums, ‘Legacies of Human Frailty’ being the sixth opus. This particular release is a new interpretation of the ‘Legacies of Frailty’ LP released in 2023 on Vendetta. That album was entirely composed and recorded by Chris during COVID, making it a one man BM project again.

As said: themes include personal despair, societal decay, moral collapse, existential dread, human cruelty, isolation and disillusionment. Not the brightest topics around but this sets them apart from the Scandinavian tradition and aligns them with the urban, introspective USBM wave.

‘Legacies of Human Frailty’ was recorded instrumentally live in the studio with minimal overdubs and edits to leave the primal energy intact: vocals were dubbed in a single take. It is a re‑recording done right. If ‘Legacies of Frailty’ was already an excellent album yet standout Black Metal within, ‘Legacies of Human Frailty’ has a touch even more visceral, more natural… the compositions are more intense and deeper and the record feels more alive. It was also recorded with additional musicians.

Raw yet emotional harsh and coarse vocals, epic synths a la Emperor, double bass drumming, blast beats, hypnotic guitars: this album has it all. It’s chaotic and imperfect but very organic. It’s a musical whirlwind altogether.

This re-recording is only available on digital format and limited tape at the moment, but hopefully it gets a proper release: it deserves it.
