Sadomortuary / In League With Satan – Preachers Of Filthy Idolatry [Split]

sadomortuary / in league with satan – preachers of filthy idolatry [split]

Info

This split cassette tape is quick to follow up on Sadomortuary’s first full-length album that was released only two months prior. This album, however, was the first sign of life from the band after the three demos and one split tape that were released between 2019 and 2020. So these Italians have suddenly woken up from some kind of extended hibernation of a few years. But their split partner In League With Satan are even better at sleeping it off, this being the first material to surface after their split 7” EP with Blaspherian almost a decade ago. So the story about ‘Italian efficiency’ and that they like to do everything at their leisure is not completely off the mark…

Sadomortuary kicks off with an intro and two new songs and although these follow up the band’s debut full-length quickly, I am not sure whether they are recorded in the same session. At least the production on these two tracks sounds a bit more muffled and dark. That adds to an equally oppressing atmosphere, but it comes at the expense of that massively grinding sound that characterizes ‘Inflicting Litanies Of Torment’. Other than that Sadomortuary delivers just what you would expect: total Beherit, Goatlord and Blasphemy worship. Slow and bulldozing guitars, some bursts of a but more furious tempo and savagely guttural vocals, Sadomortuary has it all.

Turning the tape gives us an unexpected revival of In League With Satan. When I first heard the band I was a bit disappointed, I really expected some unadulterated Venom worshipping. Once recovered from the shock, this Italian band (that shares a member of Sadomortuary too) ends up offering a good and slightly bestial sort of Black/Death Metal. While none of the band’s recordings were nicely polished and fine-tuned, the three tracks the band is serving us here are rougher than any of their most recent material (remember that their latest release dates back to 2015). Musically the band didn’t change that much since they started their hiatus years ago, but it is that ultimately raw and crude sound that makes In League With Satan’s contribution to ‘Preachers Of Filthy Idolatry’ the most interesting. This adds to the overall feeling of bestiality, propelling the band into much more of a chaos-ridden tornado of noise. Bass-heavy and with a true rehearsal sound, this is not stuff that would go down easily to the average clean sort of Black Metal fan.
