Gølgaborg, nowadays known as Hatefog, the one man depressive and atmospheric Black Metal band from Aberdeen Washington, USA returns with an new opus.
Count Morthos has never sounded this vitrolic. Not only are the tracks on ‘…In Deep Shadows’ faster, more violent, the overall production has also improved. It’s alot crispier, brighter and powerful. Without sacrificing any of the pale, desolate atmosphere characteristic of Hatefog’s vibe everything sounds incredible overwhelming.
Now – I consider ‘Suicide and Misnathropy: Depression, Lethargy, Hatred…’ from 2024 an enriching DSBM album, but this one pushes up the ante. Bands like Leviathan and Crebain and older Shining now come to mind. Lyric wise – it’s all about hatred, depression, existential dread, sadness, isolation, anhedonia, psychedelic drugs and experiences, spiritual contamination, trauma, as Count Morthos points out so nicely.
Aberdeen, Washington must be a shitty place to dwell if you ask me.
It’s a very coherent and angry album to listen to and tracks such as ‘The Circle’, ‘The Otherness’ or ‘Unself’ guarantee you won’t see the bright sun come shining through. The album clocks out at just over an hour and leaves you abandoned and suffocated.
Fans of wrist-slashing DSBM and other Prozac/Risperidone/Valum aficionados simply need to check out the new ‘…In Deep Shadows’.
