Hymnr – Far Beyond Insanity

hymnr – far beyond insanity

Info

Its time for another trip back into the mists of time to the far away long forgotten past… April 2021. Following a couple of rough demo releases, Russian Black Metal triumvirate Hymnr unleashed their four track debut album upon the world. Going by the name of ‘Far Beyond Insanity’, the album was put out on both CD and LP by Finnish label Saturnal Records and came adorned with stunning cover art that brings to mind death, the plague and an overall aura of pestilence. And that aura continues into the musical output of Hymnr, whose style of Black Metal is slightly lo-fi, highly intensive and hits you in the face like a raging torrent of murky, black water! There must be something about Black Metal from colder northern climbs, because the work of Hymnr reminds me very much of some of the Black Metal that has come out of Iceland over the last decade; swathed in morbidity, icy cold and desolation. For ‘Far Beyond Insanity’, the mood changes frequently between thoughtful, starkly atmospheric musing, and violent, swirling chaos created through ravenous drum tones and bleak guitar leads. However, ‘Part II’ kicks in with a colossal amount of groove and a catchier, methodical pace that carries with it an almost hypnotic sensation. I love the amount of creativity that has been put into this album, especially when it comes to the guitar work which has so many angles and sounds to it; you could listen to this album ten times and take something new from it on each listen! At its very core though, ‘Far Beyond Insanity’ is an intensely hostile and brooding opus.
