Deathcircle – Feast Upon the World of Illusions

deathcircle – feast upon the world of illusions

Info

One of the very first bands to arise from the Black Plague Circle was Deathcircle, which was formed in 2012. Solely consisting of O., who also features in amongst others Obskuritatem, Sulphuric Night and Night’s Majesty, a few demos and splits were released but it took until December 2022 for the debut album to be unveiled. This album, bearing the title ‘Feast Upon the World of Illusions’ marks the ten-year anniversary of the band and was conjured and recorded in just two days.

The style of Black Metal that O. opts for on ‘Feast Upon the World of Illusions’ is one of a raw kind, atonal and mostly raging in the tradition of the French Les Légions Noires movement and the Finnish descendants of that scene such as Warloghe. In that sense, the latest record contrasts with the earlier material such as the split EP with Xzælthu from 2021 or the ‘Unfair Relief’ demo from 2017, which although also atonal and suffocating in nature fell more into mid-paced atmospheric and depressive Black Metal categories. When the pace goes down on ‘Feast Upon the World of Illusions’, minimal riffs and midpaced strumming sections give off more of an early Burzum vibe and are a bit closer to the previous works released under the Deathcircle banner. Similar to previous recordings, the sound of the guitars on the debut full-length also still border on Lo-Fi territories, and the vocals still have a fair bit of distortion over them. The thundering drums and bass are more clear in sound, but as a whole the album sounds balanced. And that balance tips towards one of grittiness and oppression, one meant to drown and suffocate the listener is mostly minimal, straightforward and raging raw Black Metal.

Despite a scene that largely revolves around a handful of members, the bands coming from the Black Plague Circle have plenty of their own identity and Deathcircle doesn’t break from that pattern. On ‘Feast Upon the World of Illusions’ those that admire contrary and atonal raw blazing Black Metal will be more than pleased. Thus far the album has only been released on tape by Esfinge de la Calavera, but a CD version (released by Sinister Shadow) and vinyl edition (by Goatowarex) can be expected in due time.
