The air in the tomb reeks of stale ozone and rotting speed metal leather, dragged straight from the murky shadows of Timișoara by debutantes Spectral Curse. Their debut EP, ‘Watcher from Beyond’, channels a filthy fusion of old-school Speed Metal and raw Black Metal, sitting comfortably at the crossroads where the Blackened Thrash crunch of early Aura Noir meets the occult-tinged velocity of Desaster.
Across its brief twenty-two minutes, the release avoids over-polishing, relying on a raw, buzzing guitar tone that captures an authentic rehearsal-room snarl. While the songwriting occasionally stumbles into repetitive thrash autopilot during the mid-section, the razor-sharp urgency of ‘Hilda’ and the title track ‘Watcher from Beyond’ salvage the run with searing lead work and frantic pacing. The rhythm section drives the chaos forward with commendable horsepower, though Tudor Schiopu’s mix leaves the bass a bit buried beneath the treble-heavy attack.
It is far from a polished masterpiece, rough around the edges and still finding its footing, but it’s a promising, venomous first strike for fans of underground filth.
