Purging is a Death/Doom Metal band with occasional Blackened influences. Hailing from Long Beach, California, they released a debut demo in February 2025. This demo is nothing short of brutal, groovy, creepy and absolutely heavy, packing slow and crushing riffs that often times use dissonance, which makes them really unique.
For example, one of the highlights of this release is actually the opening track that’s comprised of a throat singing intro that settles the dark atmosphere and of the first “sample” the listener gets of their sinister Death Metal onslaught. Purging sounds like they wanted to avoid melody as much as possible, preferring to take the dissonant route as we see in the very first riff of the demo and in the other songs as well.
Therefore, as soon as the intro ends, the headbanging-inducing madness begins and never stops until the end. We also hear a few clean parts, such as the one on Magnificent Hallucinations, which also sound slightly out of tune, however I feel like that is part of the band’s charm. This song is the longest one, having almost 9 minutes of runtime. I’m personally a big fan of at least one longer song on a metal release, especially when we talk about Death/Doom and the derivates, but Purging does both: short, aggressive, comprehensive and long, slow and rotting, doing both of them exceptionally well.
For me, another aspect that gives life to this demo and also brings forward that weird, almost alien-like feeling is the cover art, featuring abstract, almost xenomorph-like figures that add a slight horror element to the atmosphere.
Usually I compare the bands I review with other artists which I find similar in style, so that the reader can figure out if what I am reviewing is what he is looking for. However, this time, I feel like comparison is pointless because hearing Purging’s Self Titled Demo for the first time is quite a unique experience for Death Metal fans, with this being one of the more distinctive releases of 2025.
