A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

When mind and body are in repose we seek to enter the spaces of the in between, the very realm where the soul seeks naught to traverse, but through curiosity we hunger for what can be experienced. It is through these experiences, we chronicle the mysticism felt, we recount the waves as we are baptised, and through dialect, a work of art is fashioned that may elude others but entrance the mind in the same breath.

‘Iron Horns of Dominion’ by Qurun communes with the daemon within one’s self, uttering the goetic verses of Black Metal and through its incantation a sigil transmuted into sound is born. Echoing a similar current to that of the early days of Rotting Christ and Necromantia, Qurun erects its temple upon this foundation, crafting a unique doctrine of aural resonance.

Therein lies a stripped down approach to the album’s sound, as though that which is frivolous and polished becomes revoked and instead what is left is a crude and raw material. However, it is these same simplistic elements which conjures a feverish and exotic atmosphere. Within its short run time , encompassing four tracks, Qurun manages to unearth layers of mysticism, like that of smoke which curls from the lips of a flame, spiralling, coiling, changing shape, and so too does the instrumental magick evokes in its spell.

‘I am Ifrit’ and ‘Chains of Qurun’ exemplify the esoteric shade from this EP, manifested through the strings and percussive bombardments, wherein the playing feels like an extension of a sorcery being practiced, broken down into that of sound. In other words, the tonal resonance of the instrumental conveys a dry tone to the riffing and drums, yet it is this organic nature which connects to the soul, in turn, creating a palpable sensation. For instance, the solo moments during ‘Chains of Qurun’ though theatric in nature , it stipples the ceremonial atmosphere in the accent of its playing.

A decrepit and ancient aura lends itself to the anatomy of the vocals, as it weaves itself in and out of the guitars and drums, echoing like a wraith through cavernous walls. The motion that is adopted adds to that “warm” textural density, for instance , the track, ‘Qurun’, wherein the vocals crawl and saunters,as result, becoming its own instrument in this aural ritual.

Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art…”. The signature of Qurun follows in the same manner wherein through sound, a harmonic frequency betwixt the soul and the hands that craft such works are discovered, and it is through this communion, a chthonic liturgy is woven.
