A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

Peru’s Dismorfia is ready to unleash their newest piece of savagery. While like Goat Semen and Anal Vomit the band draws its inspiration from the past, the musical references are quite different. Grinding and grooving, the three tracks on the latest EP ‘Sexual Mutilations and Paralytic Sorrows’ are heavily influenced by old Carcass, the first Bolt Thrower, Blood, Impetigo, Mortician, Pungent Stench, Phlegm and the likes. With heavy down-tuned guitars and a thick bass sound, the music isn’t necessarily always blistering in pace, and one could say that the charm lies in the swampy and chugging passages. The production is clear but not too clear and sufficiently muzzled in a wall of low tones. The vocals stand out a little bit in the mix, mostly growling a way in a vein that reminds me of Wombbath on their ‘Internal Caustic Torments’ LP. In terms of comparisons to contempary acts, a track like ‘Necrophlegm’ reminds me of some of the Undergang material, although Dismorfia’s growls aren’t as inhumanly low.

In just seven minutes, Dismorfia makes their point across that Grindcore is still very much alive. Whether it’s the chunky swampy groove of ‘Suppuration Of Anal Worms’, the 40-second long unadultered merciless pummeling of ‘Devoured Soul’ or the volatile bursts of ‘Necrophlegm’, the dank sound is utterly charming, devoid of unnecessary complexity and pretentious nonsense. ‘Sexual Mutilations and Paralytic Sorrows ‘should certainly appeal to fans of old school Grindcore and heavy-sounding Death Metal alike, aggressive, grooving and heavy, just as it should be.
