Newcomer Nightmare Effigy, a one-man project by Arioch from Portland, USA, recently released their first effort ‘Primordial Suffering’, an EP including 3-tracks and an intro.
On this EP you will hear a mixture of (mostly) mid-tempo Black Metal and up-tempo tremolo riffs supported by raspy venomous vocals. And speaking about the riffs, they are more dark and desolate than “frost and ice”, without stepping one foot into the depressive category. The sound is quite clear and fitting but unfortunately the programmed drums sounds a bit to clinical to my taste, although one could say the chosen approach fits the desolate way.
Concerning the fact that this is Arioch’s as Nightmare Effigy first effort, I have to say it is a good start especially the vocals. If he is able to give the drums a more “human-like” touch, I think it will benefit the entity that is Nightmare Effigy.
