Morbikon – Ov Mournful Twilight

morbikon – ov mournful twilight

Info

That music in general and metal more specifically is something that can bring together the most unlikely people. There are so many great examples of implausible collaborations, everybody remembers Metallica teaming up with Lou Reed, right? Oh, wait, not the best example… But, Black Metal band Morbikon is one of those collaborations where musicians from different walks of life and musical backgrounds come together and come up with a very solid product.

In this band, Phil “Landphil” Hall (Municipal Waste, Cannabis Corpse, Iron Reagan), Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, ex-Exit 13, ex-Soilwork) and Mathias Lillmåns (…And Oceans, Finntroll, Festerday) came together with a fourth anonymous person to present ‘Ov Mournful Twilight’ to the world.

The album’s musical content is typified by its heavily melodic and pretty technical character. The great dynamics and ever-changing tempos and riffs are offering a challenging listen, with plenty of intricate riffs and wicked melodic leads. It has a big late 90’s vibe to it, but just like Finnish newcomers Moonlight Sorcery, it is mostly based on a thick layer of classic Heavy Metal that boasts its grandiose atmosphere and melodicism. Yet, it still throttles up through blistering blast beats to maintain its furious and ferocious Black Metal, which is further enhanced by Lillmåns’ intens, raspy Black Metal vocals.

Together this fellowship forges an interesting piece of Black Metal that should appeal to fans adventurous, deeply melodic and technical Black Metal that has a good sense of atmosphere and a tasteful 90’s ambience.
