Without having felt the urge to record some demos or other short players first, this hitherto unknown duo goes straight for the full-length. Although, it is not actually that full, as at just over 25 minutes, the fun is over already. But then again, to be fair, 25 minutes is more than enough. The unpolished and thunderous mix of Black Metal and Death Metal rumbles over you like a rabid pack of wolverines, after which you do need some time to catch your breath.
And that is certainly not too much to say. While yours truly is quite used to a fair bit when it comes to all-consuming Bestial Black/Death, ‘Opus I’ is really only for the seasoned listener of the genre. The pair’s take on the genre is clearly one with their blinders on just a little tighter than average. The genre already does not excel in adventurous forays or frivolous excesses, but Morbid Invocation brings it even more one-dimensional. At basically one pace, the album pummels along in almost hypnotic fashion. The primitivism really splashes off the music and no effort is made to make it seem otherwise.
You can picture a blend between Archgoat, Abysmal Lord and Naked Whipper, this way it comes close to a heavier and more monotonous sounding Misanthropic War (compatriots who released their album last year via Godz Ov War Productions). Little gently they chop and slash their way through six songs, not counting the intro and outro, with the almost non-stop roaring vocals and staccato pounding drums taking the lead and the guitars providing an almost white noise-like static noise. As said, this is stuff for the real aficionado.
