God Dethroned – The Grand Grimoire

god dethroned – the grand grimoire

Info

With trembling little hands after their recent concert (I listened to this CD for the first time on Sunday evening after their gig at the Fenix), I put their new CD in my player. Yes, they are back and real connoisseurs will jump up and excitedly put on their debut, ‘The Christhunt’, after hearing the words God Dethroned. They had split up at the time, but Henri decided to give it another go with 3 new members…thankfully!

I already knew one track from the Displeased compilation. Since I thought their debut was absolutely brilliant – they played more brutal Death Metal back then – I was very curious. Yes, played, because the track from the compilation quickly made it clear that they had moved with the times.

Henri has swapped his brutal grunt for a more Black/Thrash-like scream, and the Black Metal influences are clearly present. At first, I thought it was a shame that they had changed, but after the first listen, I can only judge that the change has been for the better.

Wonderful killer riffs that, together with the rhythm section, form the perfect balance between Black and Death Metal. No wonder Metal Blade snapped them up at the last minute before the album should be released by Displeased Records. People, go and have a read of those lyrics; they are (naturally) anti-God but often contain a little story as well. A few recommendations to listen to are ‘The Art of Immolation’ and ‘Under a Silver Moon’ – actually, just the whole CD, but in ‘Under a Silver Moon’, Henri sings ‘Copulating Maria’, ha, yes!

As the last track, they’ve covered ‘Fire’. You know, “I am the god of hellfire, and I bring you… fire!!” Blastbeat!! This version is super brutal! I’m curious what A. Brown would think of it.

Buy this album!
