A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

Erstwhile had already caught my attention last year with their first two releases, and 2023 keeps on giving when the subject matter is quality underground Black Metal from all over the world.

Hailing from the USA, Erstwhile is another one of these incredibly new bands that already sounds amazing in its own way. And the latest EP is quite a piece of mid paced Black Metal that should please fans of bleak soundscapes that evoke a sense of isolation and overwhelming cold.

From the first track, you can already appreciate the simple yet well structured instrumentation, but as the tracks keep on going, you’ll also find a variety of imposing and majestic riffs that match perfectly with the drums and vocals. Special mention to the second track “The Fire Remains”, which has a strong theme but also conveys a lot of sadness in its melodies.

Actually, the whole EP is permeated by a feeling of longing and angry melancholy that could only be expressed through this kind of music. And the title of the EP couldn’t be more fitting, since anyone who has been through some kind of hardship and overcame it, has experienced the “Steeling of a soul” in a way.

In conclusion, Erstwhile is a worthwhile piece of angry and resentful Black Metal that should be experienced by anyone who likes music that sounds distant and can speak to you on a personal level.
