With this album we are rather late in reviewing due to circumstances, but it is worth to be mentioned here nevertheless, so with a huge apology to these three (meanwhile five) Danes here it is, finally. After a demo, an EP and a split it was finally time for these Danes to spawn their debut into this godforsaken world.
An album title like ‘Black Metal Jesus’ might sound a bit strange, but after hearing the album it is not as strange as it sounds at first: Horned Almighty plays a kind a old school Thrash and Black Metal, and they do it rather the right way. Musically, they are somewhere between Darkthrone on their more recent albums and Motörhead in their legendary NWOBHM period; Hell, if there had been a cover of ‘Ace Of Spades’ or ‘Overkill’ on this one, that would have been rather a well chosen pick! And regarding the comparison with mighty Darkthrone: this band does not sound as evil or oppressing as the masters from the North, but hey, who can?
In general the songs are mid and up-tempo, with a way of guitar playing and drumming that reminds me a lot of Darkthrone, just cleaner and therefore with a much more direct sound. Just listen for the guitar break in ‘Desecrate The World’ and you’ll know what I mean… And also this band has discovered the power of the slow break, which gives the songs just that extra. The only point of criticism is that the album is kind of clear regarding sound; a good sound, but there is no oppressing grimness on this album…
Horned Almighty has not re-invented the wheel, but if you like your Black/Thrash cult, this is certainly an album you will enjoy, especially if you are a huge Darkthrone-fan, like I am…. If you want to check them out a bit more, check their site or the Danish metal-site for ‘Desecrate The World’ and ‘Satanic Fatherland’ (a video clip). I’m sure that these songs are representative for this album…
