With ‘Anthems’, the veteran Polish horde Christ Agony once again reminds the underground why they remain one of the longest-standing forces in the Polish Black Metal scene. Formed in the early 90s and still led by the ever-dedicated Cezary Augustynowicz, the band continues to keep the faith and fuel burning within their dark and mystical craft.

Musically, ‘Anthems’ carries the band’s familiar signature; mid-paced Black Metal rooted in atmosphere rather than speed. The riffs move with a deliberate and commanding weight, weaving cold melodies that echo through the album with a sombre and almost ceremonial aura. There is a sense of patience in the songwriting, where each passage unfolds slowly, allowing the darkness to linger and deepen.

Cezar’s unmistakable rasp remains a defining element. His voice sounds less like conventional vocals and more like ritualistic proclamations emerging from the abyss. Backed by steady drumming and brooding guitar work, the album maintains a hypnotic pulse that reinforces the band’s long-established identity.

What makes ‘Anthems’ stand out is not innovation but conviction. Christ Agony proves that even after decades in the underground, they remain steadfast: one of the longest surviving Polish hordes still keeping the Black Metal flame alive with unwavering devotion. ‘Anthems’ stands as another chapter in that enduring legacy, a testament to persistence, darkness, and the unbroken spirit of the old guard.
