A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

It’s not exactly every day you see a new release from a new band featuring ex-members of acts like Sarcófago, Mutilator and Holocausto drop by. But that is indeed the case with Satanicristo, a newly formed duo that indeed earned their stripes with that genre-defining legend but can now also be found in esteemed bands like Tormentador, Insulter and Impurity. Not exactly newbies, but the nice thing about ‘Bastardzing The Holiness’: you wouldn’t say that at all.

Let’s start with the last song for a change. That’s a drum solo of sorts. Not only is that somewhat oddly placed at the end of this 12-minute EP, but it’s also clear that drummer Leprous (Tormentador, ex-Sarcófago, ex-Holocausto, ex-Mutilator) still hasn’t proven to be a real talent in those nearly 40 years since those early Sarcófago demos. But that should in no way spoil the fun, because there really is more than enough to enjoy on this EP. The charm of “Bastardizing The Holiness” lies in that authentic rattling sound. Raging guitars, distorted whammy solos, pitch-shifted vocals and a more than evident Krisiun sound in the drums (especially in this EP’s title track) really make this a true treat for those who love that primal sound from the early Latin American scene.

Anyone who is into that charismatic 80’s sound of the South American bands, underproduced but full of primal energy and doesn’t shy away from primitive recordings (including all flaws and imperfections) is very welcome to give this EP a shot. It should be out on CD through Sex Desire Records from Japan, hopefully it will also be picked up more widely for a release on other formats as well.
