In 2023 Justin Vølus surprised friend and foe with his new side project Fall of Gnosis. founded in 2022, and its 3-track EP ‘Deathlike Illusion’. A virulent mix of downtuned Death Metal, Doom and Sludge was displayed in all its ugliness on this EP. The band dives deep into the realm of psycho Death Doom Metal, blending suffocating monolithic riffs with themes of occultism and gnostic mysticism.
An impressive piece of music, this EP – which we shamefully missed reviewing.
‘Archon Imperium’ is the much anticipated follow up and the first full length. This album growls, foams at the mouth and hammers everything to a pulp from the first second on. Often compared with the likes of Celtic Frost, Esoteric, Mizmor and even Spectral Voice – and as far as I’m concerned – you can easily add Winter and Morbid Angel (slimey vocals) for that matter.
It’s violent and crusty Death/Doom and Gloom from head to start – desolate sonic landscapes where no light can pierce through drag on in darkness and despair. ‘Emanations of Isolation’ clocks out at 11+ minutes and is my personal favorite although there aren’t any weak moments on this album. It’s a cataclysm of smouldering bile and abhorrence. Bleak and grotesque.
‘Archon Imperium’ is an album that will make you gasp for air and that will torture you for over 37 minutes.
In short – its fuckin’ briljant and shows just how talented and Justin Vølus can be. Check it out.
