Convulse – Inner Evil [EP]

convulse – inner evil [ep]

Info

It seems the reunion virus keeps on creating victims all over the place. This time it’s Finnish Old School Death Metal combo Convulse who thought “Let’s take a look what all the fuzz is about those old geezers pickin’ up their instruments again”.

I suppose many of you have their debut ‘World Without God’ on the shelves, which gain them a lot of notice in the underground. And when years go by, the reputation got bigger and bigger. Most even forget their second album ‘Reflections’. After the birth of ‘World Without God’ 22 years ago, 2013 is the year they report for duty again, this time with 2 new tracks.

It’s only human to compare the tracks with the aforementioned classick debut. Well, I think that would be the nemesis for Convulse right now…their reputation made possible by their debut. Original members Telenius (bass) and Jämsä (guitar and vokills) created an Old School Death Metal EP based on some Doomy Death – Autopsy passages and emphasis on the groove part of mid tempo riffing.

With the track ‘Inner Evil’ it sometimes feels a bit uninspired…too easy even. The Slayer’s ‘Raining Blood’ outro doesn’t help either. With ‘God is Delusion’ the variation of speedy drums, polka-beats and faster riffs alongside the Doom/Death ideas, is a more pleasant one to listen. Jämsä low hoarse grunt is fitting more in this track and the use of back-to-back solos resulting in a haunting twin-solo in the end of the song make it interesting.

As conclusion I can only say that one interesting song is not enough to convince me, I hope they can shake off the high hopes created by their past and come back with a great full length this summer.
