Lately, when I write reviews, I get to wondering who my audience is. I realize that I have a few years on my grizzled bones and that if and when I do describe a band, and I mention those from the past, how many would know or hear the references? Now, mind you, no disrespect intended to you, the loyal readers of this fine publication, but I have reason for my musings, and I will tell you why.
Upon listening to the latest from Goatlord Corp. I was reminded of Gehenna and particularly their ‘Murder’ era. That particular album was released in 2000. So here is my quandary. How many would get and understand my reference? I would like to think the inquisitive streak in you would seek out the band and therefore expose you to the abyss that many of us have fallen into, ever deeper into that which is the world of Metal. For those others who know Metal and are not new to the scene and understand my reference to the band’s sound during that particular era, I thank you.
So, back to Goatlord Corp, I am hearing a particularly relentless Blackened Death Metal, heavy on the Death Metal spectrum. Whereas with Gehenna, during their flirtation with the Death Metal sound, they were a bit more pummeling, maybe a bit oppressive in their approach. Mainly because the then drummer ‘Blod’ (R.I.P.) came from a band called 122 Stab Wounds, so his approach amplified that quality that Gehenna were beginning to explore.
Speaking of drummers. Goatlord Corp. has in their ranks none other than Alsvid from such luminaries as Seth, Fornication, and Enthroned. Needless to say, that base is covered. So with Goatlord Corp. the music itself is quite a story of fast and faster, with some scattered moments of mood and the hints of something grander. Be forewarned, this album will most definitely please fans of Dark Funeral, Myrkskog, Angelcorpse. Goatlord Corp.’s thread runs through all these bands. Those seeking mood and sentiment may need to look elsewhere.
Now, having listened to this a few times, I am generally pleased with the songs and the delivery. Being composed of some noteworthy musicians who know their way around their particular instruments create a fairly interesting affair. Mind you, it’s nothing you have not heard before, but I feel an energy and honest enthusiasm in each of the 8 tracks.
The production adds to this with a loud and warm production. With a 35-minute run time, it won’t take up too much of your time, and it would be perfect for a workday commute. Which I did a few times myself, helps with the stress, you know?
I guess if I really need to nitpick and dig for a negative, it would be the name Goatlord Corp.? I know there are probably a million bands with Goatlord in or part of their name, but the Corp. sort of irks me, but I guess you can call me superficial or whatnot.
So consider this a barnstormer of a release, and as long as you know what to expect, it could be on your rotation/playlist more often than not.
