Quebecois Black Metal unit Délétère present a follow up to their second LP, 2018’s “De Horae Leprae”, with the EP “Theovorator: Babelis Testamentum”. Generally performing at a churning mid-tempo pace, the band offer three long-form songs which maintain an atmosphere that is at once aggressive, wistful and contemplative.
Guitars often separate from each other into frosty, distinctive melodies that build a greater overall texture rich with harmony as the rhythm section thunders along in lockstep. Drumming that is minimalistic yet dexterous and well performed provides a consistent framework over which melodies unfurl and express themselves in a recording that is overall dynamic and warm in its production. Instruments and vocals are balanced well and bass stands out prominently despite the business of the guitarwork. Vocals expressed as a tormented snarl illustrate lyrics that are otherwise unpublished.
At just twenty minutes of run time, “Theovorator: Babelis Testamentum” is a highly listenable and memorable cut of melodic Black Metal – recommended for fans of Aorlhac, Sühnopfer, Sinmara.
