Info

D.R.E.P. is short for Drastically Reducing Earth’s Population. Originally, this Dutch band was formed in the late 90’s with members that would eventually play in notable acts like The Monolith Deathcult, Duivel and Allfather. After 25 years silence, the group has finally put out their first self-titled EP. The long awaited release yields extremely cold Industrial Black Metal that’s not unlike Mysticum or Diabolicum.

Immediately after pressing the play button ‘Drastically Reducing Earth’s Population’ kicks off at full speed. Mechanically programmed drums blast away in support of the ‘Transylvanian Hunger’ like riffs. Howling screams adorning misanthropy complete with a Burzum-esque undertone. And all of it is dressed in a production that makes it purposefully flat and cold, but still decidedly clear.

Musically, this is a release that is hard to easily listen to. The guitars might offer some catchy riffing, but overall it’s fairly flat. Don’t expect stand-out songs or parts that beg for a replay. This is harsh Black Metal that feels deliberately off-putting, as if it can only be enjoyed when in a certain mood. It wants to keep a certain distance from the listener. Whilst that might not sound very logical, it feels like the only ‘true’ way for playing misanthropic music.

So, D.R.E.P. offered an EP that is cold and not easy to listen to. It shares similarities with more renowned Industrial Black Metal bands, but without catchy hooks or melodies. It’s well deserving a spin, especially for those that are into the menacing side of the genre.
