From the Pagan Vastlands of Warsaw, Poland comes Wolfpath, a new unity in which multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Void is joined by current Acherontas and former Inferno drummer Marcello. After having formed in 2021, the band’s first output is a self-titled EP which saw its release just after the dawn of 2023.
The sound on ‘Wolfpath’ can be described as modern sounding Black Metal with a fairly distinct Polish vibe. The production is clear with a somwhat raw edge in the guitar, a thick rumbling bass sound and rattling drums. The band chose to focus on a few guitar riffs per song, repeating them throughout to form a red thread in the songs. The same goes for the lyrics, which are often reiterated in each track. On the flipside of this more repetitive nature, the vocals of Void are diverse, with a raspy style that is reminiscnent of former Marduk singer Legion, yet with more variation ranging to growls and clean vocals. The drums courtesy of Marcello are probably the most dynamic throughout each of the songs, changing pace or simply just adding variation or offbeat rhythm changes. This division of consistenly recurring elements against a backdrop of a thick bass and ever-changing drums works very well, although the lyrics may be a bit too repetitive for my liking. Regardless of that nitpicking, the EP is consistently good, with ‘Konstelacja Ognia’ being both the heaviest track and the clear album highlight out of the five (‘Z Popiolow’ is an ambient interlude with whispers and growls). Altogether, Wolfpath deliver a fine debut EP filled with modern sounding Polish Black Metal, once again showing the depth in quality of the current Polish Black Metal scene.
