Over the past decade or so the Portuguese Black Metal scene has spawned an incredible amount of quality Black Metal, Raw Black Metal to be exact. Without wanting to take anything away from the importance of bands like Decayed, most of those old bands have long since been overtaken by the younger generation, who have found a new way to express their dark powers in the ultimate rawness of the genre. It were bands like Black Cilice and Candelabrum that set new standards for dark mysticism in their deep-rooted Lo-Fi texture. Repúdio is a new band that has entered that impressive Portuguese firmament with ‘Linhagens Esquecidas’ as its first achievement.

Starting with a rather noisy sort of intro the band doesn’t take too much time to burst into that recognizable gritty guitar tone and delves deep into the intricacies of the Raw and Lo-Fi kind of Black Metal. The resemblances with Black Cilice (from around the first full-length album) is unmistakable, yet Repúdio also mixes in some elements from the somewhat noisy sort of Drone/Doom Metal scene. This adds to the overall hallucinating and hypnotizing experience of this first demo tape. This also brings the first Candelabrum album to mind, especially with those repeating noisy parts.

It might be knocking on an already open door, but this delirious nightmare caught in audio will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you have fallen in love with that Portuguese sonic horror that sounds bleak and dark at the very same time, this is a demo that should not be missed. Definitely fodder for the devoted noisy Black Metal fan.
