The hand that pens a sonnet driven by incendiary rage of the heart is a remarkable feat, for it is the force which cannot be seen coming into this realm, an emotion that exists within the soul birthed through ink and nestled within a parchment. The result that is created becomes an organic work void of any hindrance, for what is before you is the speech of the soul naked in its glory for another to eat upon.
Crowning itself with the Medieval steel of Black Metal, Achathras anoints itself with sword and sulfur crafting an album, ‘Darkness of the Ancient Past’ which adds it’s sound of Old school Black Metal to the vast well that came before, with bands such as Odium, Emperor and early Taake. Though the sound may be familiar, it ceases not to be barren of a soul. For what lies before the mind is a construct of beauty and malignance , where the melodies birthed grants unto the senses both peace and dread in the same flow.
‘Anointed with Moonfire’ and ‘Emanation of Chaos’ showcase the melodious transmission exuded through the strings and keys, for these act as the inner workings of this wondrous creation, the language for which the guitar adopts feels shimmering in its quality letting the senses inherit a majestic yet calming sensation. However,in the same stroke, the percussion introduces a bombastic element breaking up these tranquil moments yet at the same time accentuating the differences in the shading of each other’s candor. The crux of the album can be discovered through its tongue, for the voice that permeates through these melancholic notes grants an additional layer to the atmosphere experienced. ‘The Curse of Supremacy’ showcases this prowess whereby the vocals feel rather nature and ghost-like, as though the very landscape that is sculpted from this aural harmony speaks forth in different tongues.
Achathras takes the seed of a melody and from its magick, the soul witnesses the birth of a new world, a world wherein language is seamless from the tongue of the mind to the dialect of the mountains,for the notes that are conjured from this album stitches together every element to be harmonized as one entity. To be within the flow of this aura, is to coalesce with its unbridled energy, for I truly believe at the end of this journey, the experience gleaned could never be divorced from the soul.
