Abberoth – Revolutione Spirituum [EP]

abberoth – revolutione spirituum [ep]

Info

Abberoth is a Symphonic Black Metal from Mexico. ‘Revolutione Spirituum’ is their first step in the scene, released in 2022. With their first full-length (‘Reverie Velado’) out as well, let’s re-exhume this EP and see where the band started.

Being both a Black Metal band and coming from Mexico, it won’t come as a surprise that Abberoth’s sound is rough around the edges. The production is clear enough to discern every instrument, but it’s very thin. Especially the drums sound rehearsal room like. The keyboards are very upfront and dominate all other instruments (as expected). At times, a guitar lead/solo does break through the symphonic barrier. Unfortunately, though, these too sound very shrill, but they do manage to retain the Black Metal rawness.

Unlike more mainstream symphonic Black Metal acts, the songs are short and basic. The keyboards and the guitar seem to playing the same chord progressions over each other for the majority of the time, giving little depth to the music. As a whole, the EP has enough interesting riffs to make it worth listening too, but it won’t turn too many heads. The atmosphere within the tracks is sufficiently convincing, but feels in stark contrasts with the samples Abberoth has chosen to introduce their songs with. These deal with war, revolution and a locomotive(?), topics probably would’ve been a better fit for other styles of music.

All in all, ‘Revolutione Spirituum’ isn’t bad. It is plagued by numerous flawed aspects, but as a whole it is interesting in that it is different from most contemporaries. Fortunately, the rawness is present and it’s atmosphere convincing. These factors are done right by Abberoth and make the it worth the time.
