In 2021, Templum Obscenum Records unleashed the CD release of the ‘Traversing the Blood Mist’ EP by Swedish Black/Death Metal duo Death Epiphany. They then followed this up with a cassette release in 2022 following an impressive initial reception to the album. This EP is the bands debut offering and from moment one spews out bestial Black/Death savagery in a blistering maelstrom of violence and chaos. there is is literally nothing about this EP that is subtle, calm or atmospheric; this is brute force of the most aggressive order, created by fusing ravenous throat searing growls with barbaric, bleak toned guitar leads and bombastic, punishing drum work. And whilst all of this is going on, the constant rumble of bass underlines the EP’s sheer barbarism. Of particular note is the drumming display which switches between crushing fury and a more grandiose climactic sound, though it never loses its potency. The riffs too are striking and bleak sounding; and often they have an old school Death Metal edge to them, tempered by the ice cold steel of Black Metal. ‘Traversing the Blood Mist’ is a mightily impressive debut EP; a microcosm of controlled anger and primordial rage unleashed at will and with malicious fore thought.
