Info

n Mesopotamian mythology, Ereshkigal (“great lady under earth”) was the goddess of Irkalla, the land of the dead or underworld. In Mexico, Ereshkigal is one of the oldest Black Metal bands and considered pioneers of the Mexican scene. We’re highlighting their 2023 full length ‘In My Kingdom of Darkness’.

A pompous and menacing intro and we’re off – rasping raw vocals that float excruciatingly up from the mush of swirling necrotic guitars. Supported by light symphonic and atmospheric keys, Ereshkigal adhere strongly to the second wave of Black Metal bands. In addition to the dark satanic influences, there is regular alternation with spoken passages that evoke a Pagan feeling. Their mysterious Mesopotamian influences/inspiration of old keeps sounding refreshing.

The album features strong musicianship. Ereshkigal ignores trends and steadily forges ahead. We’re treated to 46 minutes of rock-solid Mexican Black Metal. It’s genuine, it comes from a blackened heart, it’s true.

Production is more adequate and elevates everything above average. I can understand not everyone digs Mexican Black Metal but those interested in some old school and exotic (sic) should check out this band. And their label.
