Devouring Famine is a one‑man Black Metal project from California, United States, active since 2022 and initially operating independently.
The project follows the traditional raw/atmospheric Black Metal approach, issuing a stream of demos and EPs in its first year, before expanding into longer releases and compilations. Sole member behind Devouring Famine is the musician Devouring Famine who is also active in Cryptic Elegy.
‘A Man Whispering With The Dead’ is the sixth full-length and follow-up to 2025’s ‘Chains Slavery Filth’ album.
The musician has always stated that his goal was to put music on this world and so far he succeeded excellently in that. ‘A Man Whispering With The Dead’ is another showcase of the musical genius of Devouring Famine. Dissonant, unsettling and dark Black Metal, not unlike the exploits from Lamp Of Murmuur, Leviathan or latter day Mayhem, is being poured out of the speakers. What is immediately noticeable is the more detailed sound and clearer productions and the more melancholic melodic guitar work. Melancholic, spacy guitar parts, strong melodic riffing, subtle breaks, unexpected breaks and tempo changes. Just enough reverb and echo: brilliant music. Each and every song is a small masterpiece on itself.
Devouring Famine has always experimented with different subgenres, but on this album, everything just falls neatly into place.
You have the typical buzzsaw guitars, the melodic solos, pounding drums and the deep stomping bass… Like smouldering lava the music rushes forth, creating a torrid yet sometimes freezing atmosphere. ‘A Man Whispering With The Dead’ is an album based on light and darkness: the fast, harder parts of the songs and the acoustic slower parts.
For being so innovative and impeccable in execution ‘A Man Whispering With The Dead’ gets a maximum score from me and hopefully all these sublime albums/releases get released into physical form sooner or later. And do check out track 6 for having one of the longest songtitles, ever!
