Wormface – A Sound You Can Smell [Demo]

wormface – a sound you can smell [demo]

Info

What does a reviewer have to add when pretty much all the grass has already been cut from under his feet by the band themselves? With a band name like this and a demo with such a title, you pretty much already know what kind of meat you’re dealing with. But when the Bandcamp page then also talks about “Wormface smells like the toxic remains of Celtic Frost dissolved in a barrel of acid“, you might as well pack your bags as a right-minded critic.

Indeed, the music of Wormface, whose three musicians we recognise from their other band Anthropophagous, sounds nasty and I am therefore glad you don’t actually smell it during playback. I can only guess at how ultimately rancid that must be. But that Celtic Frost in barrel of acid doesn’t sound too far from the truth either. In fact, Wormface sounds like a blubbery and slimy mixture of Celtic Frost, Hooded Menace, Demilich, Broken Hope and Grief. The solid base of Death Metal is interrupted here and there by a fat, almost sludge-like riff. But the rocking rhythm actually keeps running entirely through this 5-track demo (with a playing time of just over 15 minutes), so it does keep some momentum and doesn’t really get bogged down in a Sludge snoozer. The pace picks up a bit more in, for instance, the closing title track to a somewhat up-tempo punk vibe in which Autopsy’s dirty-rock also shows their influence. Of course, neither very innovative nor earth-shattering, but just an entertaining demo that I’m also pretty sure was made for that purpose.
