Wolvëin – Blasphemous Werewolf [Demo]

wolvëin – blasphemous werewolf [demo]

Info

Observing the red/black aesthetic of the cover and adding the Dungeon Synth intro, there is really nothing else to expect but Raw Black Metal in the late 90s tradition with a penchant for medieval themes. However, on ‘Blasphemous Werewolf’, Wolvëin, a one-man band by the almost eponymous Wolvein, brings us something very different.

The contrast between the atmospheric intro and the rest of the music could hardly be greater. Although undoubtedly Black Metal, the musical influences for this demo come from a very different place. The cutting, almost reckless Black Metal delivered with all evil intentions has nothing to do with the equally atmospheric, edoch Raw Black Metal, that was actually expected. Instead, we are treated to a hefty, crunchy bite of Black Metal of the bawdiest and grittiest kind. It holds the middle ground between Blasphemy and Impaled Nazarene (at the time of their ‘Tol Cormpt Norz, Norz, Norz…’ album). The cacophony of brutal riffs, ferocious drums and barking vocals (with the requisite reverb, of course) come together in a great collision, with the chaos made complete by the mechanical production that further highlights the comparison with Impaled Nazarene’s debut. The Dungeon Synth elements still poke up here and there, so a comparison with Beherit is also definitely valid. However, they do not play a very big role after the intro, until they are allowed to lead things off again for the outro.

All in all, ‘Blasphemous Werewolf’ forms a surprising demo that musically brings something totally different from what I had prepared myself for. But since I can have my fair share of Blasphemy, Impaled Nazarene and Beherit, I certainly enjoyed this one.
