If you are familiar with the releases, prior of this new album, of Winter of Sin, you will be as surprised as I am. Founding members Schmerz and Schrat recruited Michiel van der Plicht (ex-God Dethroned, Prostitute Disfigurement and Katafalk among others) on drums and Henri Sattler (well known as the man behind God Dethroned) as the new vocalist. I have heard all the releases since the demo, but Winter of Sin never caught my “let’s put some Winter of Sin on”-attention. A typical “they are not doing a bad job, but it doesn’t really move me”-kinda band. Comparing “Violence Reigns Supreme” with their last album “Razernij” the results are less keyboards, more blackened death metal vocals, faster yet still melodic songs and no more lyrics in the Dutch language. This album is a good example of how the 1990s mix of Scandinavian Black and Death Metal sounds like in 2014. Typical old Dawn, Mörk Gryning, Scaramentum and Dissection ideas and influences can be heard, which I applaud. Good leads, riffs, drums, vocals, melodies, pace…A nice and very welcome surprise!
