Utbyrd – Varskrik

utbyrd – varskrik

Info

Utbyrd from the Arctic north of Norway were founded back in 2012 and the debut album “Varskrik” was already released in digital form in 2017. With Petrichor Records they finally found a record label that was of the opinion that this release should also appear in physical form and I am very grateful for that, because this record MUST be heard!

On “Varskrik” we can expect Norwegian Black Metal, symphonic style. But the band doesn’t move in the soft waters of commercially successful bands like Dimmu Borgir. From the purely symphonic aspect, listening to the album often brings to mind the criminally underrated Obtained Enslavement. The old Carach Angren can also serve as a comparison, as the Dutchmen also use the keys to the same extent. The keyboard is indispensable and is capable of giving you goosebumps.

Right at the beginning, in the almost 12-minute opener “Karsten Og Draugen”, the band already offers the full spectrum of their artistic work. Varied and melodic riffing meets partly furious drums and a beautifully hysterically sick singer. In addition, there are a few clear vocals that only Scandinavian bands are able to conjure up. Madness.

The following six pieces are in no way inferior to the grandiose opener and move consistently at this enormously high level. Sometimes the band goes a bit more progressive, like in “Deildegasten”, while it gets really epic in the grandiose final act “Skogen”, but there is always this fantastic keyboard work behind it all.

Utbyrd have succeeded in creating a perfectly balanced melange of truly nasty and at the same time incredibly anthemic Black Metal, which despite all the “modernity” also has the necessary touch of old school.

In terms of sound, they manage the almost impossible feat of sounding crystal clear, powerful and yet raw and dirty. There’s nothing to complain about on the cover either, so there’s only one thing left to say: Buy this record! (HaCeBo)
