Ulfsdalir – Jera – Im Weltenkreis

ulfsdalir – jera – im weltenkreis

Info

Besides a split 7” EP and a mini CD this is Ulfsadlir’s fourth release, a new full-length after the pretty well received “Christenhass” from 2004. Although not entirely new, as these recordings date back to somewhere in 2003, the Ulfsdalir spirit is kept alive in these older recordings as well…

This nicely titled album is some kind of a concept album, not in the traditional way though. The six tracks on the album are not only blessed with a title for their own, but also with an element (air, fire, earth, ice and the last one with end) and with a stadium of the life’s cycle (morning, day, evening, night, death) – of course all written in German language. With this extra dimension to the album, it gives the atmospheric music something to boost from, the heathen/pagan black metal from the sole member of this well crafted project/band is definitely not ‘just another’ one man pagan black metal band. After having followed this band over the years it is safe for me to say that it never disappointed me along the way, in all its forms, from faster more hatefilled black metal to the pagan-like black metal that Ulsdalir portrays on this album. Besides three black metal tracks “Jera – Im Weltenkreis” also comes up with three dark ambient tracks, pretty much in the best Vinterriket style (let’s say, the stuff on the splits with Northaunt, Fjelltrone, Veiled Allusions and Manifesto), though it gets the pace right out of the black metal tracks and it feels a bit weird, it really adds to the atmosphere on this album – and, eventually, you’ll get used to the breaks.

Though this is not in the direct line of “Christenhass”, this is a bleak black metal album, with slight pagan influences (without sounding too dodgy or folky in the Finntroll kind of way) that is highly recommended. Not only due to the pretty interesting music but also for the atmosphere that is carefully constructed with all that was needed. For those who are interested, you should check the better underground mailorders for this, but do not hesitate too long as it is only pressed in 300 hand-numbered copies.
