Udręka – Zgnij [EP]

udręka – zgnij [ep]

Info

‘Zgnij’ introduces us to Udręka, presenting the first 17 minutes of recorded material of the group from Kielce, Poland. During the three songs of the EP, we get a fairly good idea what the band is about, often playing their Black Metal with a fair amount of speed.  Melodies are not far away, but the band is far from melodic. The exception perhaps is closing track ‘Mięsem’ which shows the band at their most melody-centred and even brings us a nice little solo at the end. When the tempo goes down a notch, the band shows a penchant for rocking and chugging riffs, and in these sections their creative riff writing and rhythms surface the most. It’s here that the thick bellowing bass sound is most prominent, adding a layer of heaviness to an otherwise fairly clean yet not too neat production. What adds a layer of filth is the hoarse and diverse vocals, bordering to near gurgling territories at times but also taking detours to cited lyrics and higher pitched madness. Together things sound clear but not too clean, best representing the modern take of the band on the genre.

Black Metal to the core, often up tempo but with enough dynamics and changes of pace, ‘Zgnij’ is an enjoyable debut release. Udręka certainly has it in them to stand out in the large number of high quality Polish Black Metal bands, let’s see what the future brings for them!
