Triumphal Vengeance – Atavistic Darkness [EP]

triumphal vengeance – atavistic darkness [ep]

Info

This new one-man act, founded by an anonymous figure who goes under the name of Nebel, has its roots in Chile but now operates out of Vienna, Austria. This ‘Atavistic Darkness’ is the act’s first feat, and 4-track EP that just lasts over 15 minutes and was self-released by the band earlier this year. Born For Burning Productions from the USA was wise enough to sign up for the cassette tape version of this great EP. And, if I am well informed, we’ll be able to get a vinyl version through the German Urtod Void label too.

And, both re-releases, regardless of physical format, are more than justified. For the occasion, Nebel remastered the recordings. The main difference is that the drums stand out much better, but the overall performance also benefits from this retouched sound. All instruments get enough space to shine and excel. Musically Triumphal Vengeance finds itself in European Black Metal territories, while not specifically Nordic, it has some of the same intricate melodies and nifty compositions. While the guitars have the most prominent role, the simplicity of the drums are in full service of the overall atmosphere. It might some time to get fully used to the vocals, at least, it cost me a couple of spins. Nebel’s ‘regular’ Black Metal vocals are not the best around, but I definitely like his more howling vocals. These howling vocals are a little Burzum-ish at times, nearing the Depressive Black Metal genre. This way Triumphal Vengeance combines elements from both classical and contemporary Black Metal scenes into something that sounds just fresh and inspiring. North American readers can turn to Born For Burning Productions and Europeans have to keep an eye on Urtod Void’s websites. Definitely recommended.
