Surgical Invasion – Malignant Devastation [EP]

surgical invasion – malignant devastation [ep]

Info

This Ukrainian Thrash Metal duo makes no secret of their inspiration. The band name and the cover with this EP give it all away, the whole medicine cabinet opens up and we start the dissection. Oh, no, not quite. No evil doctors this time, more like a paean to today’s medics. I read that the first issue is about the pandemic called drugs and drinking and the second about cancer as an all-consuming disease and the good doctors who help with it.

Okay, so much for the lyrical content, then on to the music. It can best be described as a flame-in-the-pan kind of Thrash Metal that stands between the fiery, angular and fast Thrash Metal of a band like Razor and Heathen and the more melodic side of Megadeth (‘Rust In Peace’ to ‘Countdown To Extinction’). In the process, the vocals are not entirely free of a pinch of grunt, giving the whole thing an extremely brutal feel. A combination that might seem a bit strange on paper, but which turns out to work fine in practice, except for the slightly odd-looking break in the first song. These two songs, with a total playing time of only a little over 7 minutes, certainly taste like more. And that comes in handy, as the pair is working on a full-length album, on which these two songs will reappear. I’ll keep my eyes open.
